The same comments that I posted in my review of Volume One of Dangeau's "Journal" apply here as well. This journal is one of the key eye-witness accounts of the court of Versailles under Louis XIV. For the serious student of French 17th and 18th century history, it and the other volumes of Dangeau's journal are a must-read. However, they are not for the faint of heart. They are long and Dangeau's literary style and powers of observation and just not as interesting as Saint-Simon's, to whom he is often compared. If you want to start anywhere, and especially if you have limited time, I would recommend the Memoirs of "Madame", the Princesse Palatine (sister in law to Louis XIV, a witty and keen observer of life at Versailles during roughly the same time period that Dangeau was portraying.)Product details
