Darkness First by James Hayman is the third book in the McCabe and Savage series

In the dark shadows of a summer evening a young woman named Tiffany Stoddard is brutally slain by a remorseless killer's razor sharp blade.

Learning that her closest childhood friend was nearly killed in the same incident, Portland Detective Maggie Savage rushes to the scene to join the State Police investigation.
Maggie soon discovers the killer's name is Conor Riordan. There's only one problem. Conor Riordan doesn't exist.

The only person who can provide a clue as to who Riordan really is, is the victim's eleven-year-old sister, Tabitha. And now Tabitha has turned up missing.

Soon Maggie and her long time partner, Detective Sergeant Michael McCabe, find themselves in a desperate race against time to find the missing child before she becomes a vicious killer's next victim.

Following the critically acclaimed The Cutting and The Chill of Night, Hayman's third instalment in the McCabe and Savage series, Darkness First, is utterly gripping. Fans of Richard Montanari and Michael Connelly will be hungry for more.

Praise for James Hayman
'A stunning debut that gripped me from first page to last. A thriller of a thriller!' Tess Gerritsen

'Supremely accomplished storytelling' Daily Mail

'Taut, suspenseful . . . every bit as dark and sinister as Lehane and Connelly' Richard Montanari

James Hayman spent more than twenty years as a senior creative director at one of New York's largest advertising agencies. He and his wife now live in Portland, Maine. Darkness First is his third Michael McCabe detective thriller.

Why I read this book:

When I started attending the Maine Crime wave writing conference, I decided to make an effort to get to know and support Maine crime writers. It was through the Maine Crime Writer's blog that I was first introduced to James Hayman's writing. Although Darkness Falls isn't the first in his McCabe and Savage series, it caught my eye when Amazon was having a sale on the ebook.

My one sentence summary:

Savage returns to her Downeast home to catch a sadistic murder who may be closer than she knows.

Kudos:

This isn't the first time that I've jumped into a series part way. Hayman has written a standalone that has depth because of the novels that have come before and will come after. I particularly enjoyed the interplay between Savage, who takes center stage, and McCabe, who doesn't come into the story until later. They share a night in this novel that feels like the culmination of several books worth of sexual tension and heartfelt longing. These characters are so well established that I'd read another in the series just to see how they sort through the consequences of their night of passion. Then again I love tortured romance. However, their romance only takes up a fraction of the novel. There is enough gritty crime drama and flawed characters to keep a reader turning the page between the moments of personal drama. I also appreciated a lot of the local flavor.

Quibbles:

This book took me a long time to read. Whether it was because I was reading in e-format or that I bought the book shortly before my daughter was born, I am ashamed to admit that it did not hold my attention after the first murder. It took a long road trip to get me passed the hump. Then I couldn't put it down. I also wondered about using the unstable veteran who is an expert in hand to hand and marksmanship. It is becoming a common trend. Toward the end there were a lot of twists and turns before Savage finally catches the killer felt like being in a pinball machine.

Finale verdict:

I love Savage and McCabe. Their characters are rich and complex. Hayman's crime fiction is fast-paced and filled with a balance of gory details and police procedural. The next novel in the series is Girl in the Glass. It's was already on my to read list for the title and cover art alone.

Darkness First McCabe and Savage Thrillers Book 3 edition by James Hayman Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Years ago, I spent plenty of time in both northern and southern Maine, and the setting of this story rings true for me, as well as the proliferation of prescription drug abuse, a huge problem in rural USA these days. The mystery was well-plotted, and unlike some critics, I found it easy to follow the various POVs throughout.

I can't get through books containing frequent grammatical and spelling errors. I did NOT notice errors in this one. Perhaps the issues pointed out by others were cleaned up since it was first published. Also, I don't understand why folks get hung up on the author's different spelling of real places in Maine. This is fiction, not a history book or travel guide!

An easy read. Recommended, especially if you like stories set in Maine.
Although initially put off by the brutality of the central murder in this thriller/mystery, I was quickly drawn into the warmth and intriguing, realistic relationships among the book's investigating protagonist, Maggie Savage, and her friends, family and law enforcement partners. I'll read more of Hayman's books just to spend time with Maggie Savage, a thirty-something Maine police detective who is both strong and vulnerable, and whose relationships are compelling but complicated - enough to make me want to read future books. Her partner Michael McCabe makes an appealing appearance in this book, and intrigued me enough to order Hayman's first two books in which McCabe figures prominently (The Cutting and The Chill of Night). The police investigative details were woven in smoothly with action, narration and ongoing character development, so that I never felt this book was strictly a police procedural (although those details felt realistic and accurate); instead, I read on first, because of the characters and their interactions, and second, because of the well-paced action. The book's climactic scenes were so well written that I found both my fists and breath clenched despite myself. And the Maine setting lingered in my mind for days.
In this third book of the McCabe and Savage series, Maggie Savage goes home to Washington County when her best friend is attacked when she is witness to a murder. The murdered girl was a dealer of Oxycontin, a scourge in northern Maine, and seems to be part of a larger team that stole a large number of pills from Canada and is selling them in Maine. Maggie joins the local and State Police in trying to find the killer.
I've read several of this series, all out of order not that it makes much difference as this can be read as stand-alone novels. I love the Portland-based books, but it was nice to move the setting to DownEast. I also liked that Maggie had the starring role in this book; usually, McCabe is the primary character but he only had a minor but important role here.
The plot moves along pretty fast and I think it was the tightest of all the M&S books I've read. I kept suspecting different people and even at the end, there was a twist that almost threw me. Another very enjoyable read by Mr. Hayman.
I recommend these books if you don't want to really think about details. I've read all three books in this series. The plots are good if you can't guess who the killer is half-way through. I like the flawed nature of McCabe, although the relationship between him and Savage frustrates me by the third book. And not in a "they should be together" kind of way, but in a "I don't get it" kind of way.

The dialogue is repetitive and too long. What could be conveyed in two, maybe three sentences, gets stretched out to five or seven while just rephrasing the same thought. People don't talk this way, especially cops who tend to be brief and to the point. I want more grit and cynicism in the voices of the characters who deal in death.

I also noticed that the victims have been killed the exact same ways in the past two books knives in the genital regions (different killers). With also many ways to kill a person, why be limited?
